to School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering
School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (SCME) at East China University of Science and Technology was formerly known as School of Chemistry and Pharmacy (SCP). To meet the needs of the university’s rapid growth and development, SCP was established in October 1998, on the basis of the former School of Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceutical Engineering, the Chemistry Department of the School of Sciences, and the basic chemical teaching and research section of the Basic Education Institute; it was renamed as SCME after proper arrangement of the subjects and the adjustment of faculties in March 2006.
The school consists of two departments (Department of Chemistry and Department of Fine Chemicals), three research institutes (Institute of Applied Chemistry, Institute of Industrial Catalyst and Institute of Fine Chemicals) and two centers (Center of Analysis & Test and Laboratory for Chemical Education). There are more than 200 faculty and staff members, including 1 academician CAS, 3 Changjiang Distinguished Professors, 1 Scientist-in-Chief of the National 973 Program, 80 professors, and associate professors of more than 20 PhD supervisors and 50 MS supervisors.
The school adheres firmly to the goal of “the chemistry is the foundation, the applied chemistry is the feature, balanced development in science and technology, its applied chemistry unit is well known internationally, and its engineering chemistry teaching is a leader in China”. SCME, aiming to achieve a proper integration of scale, structure and quality, has adopted a development strategy of combining the expansion of extension and the improvement of intension with a focus on the latter. It also emphasizes the “three key elements”. The first is to upgrade its educational model, focusing on talent development to enhance the overall quality of its staff and students for scientific R&D. The second is to improve its first rank doctoral degree programs for enhancement of professional training and optimization of the structure of all school units. The third is to continue the reform and improvement of its teaching and research programs taking full advantages of the university’s resources of talents and facilities..
The school is proud to be the home of two national key disciplines (Applied Chemistry and Industrial Catalysis), a Shanghai key discipline (Fine Chemistry), a national laboratory (Key Laboratory of Advanced Material, Ministry of Education), the teaching base of Chemistry for nationwide engineering programs, Demonstration Center of Chemical Lab of Shanghai, 3 national fine courses and 3 Shanghai fine courses. Every year, the school researchers are engaged in more than 10 major national R&D projects and publish over 200 papers with more than half of them searchable by SCI and EI.
The school has a highly qualified and experience staff and well equipped labs to provide quality education and training for its students. The school offers the first rank PhD and MS programs in five areas (Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analyzed Chemistry and Macromolecular Physics and Chemistry), PhD and MS programs in 3 additional areas (Applied Chemistry, Industrial Catalysis and Advanced Materials and Preparation), 2 Engineering Master programs (Leather Chemistry & Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering & Light Chemical Industry and Technology ), The school’s post-doctoral stations offer many post-doc opportunities in several important fields of its disciplines. Currently, there are over 10 post-docs, 150 doctoral students, 400 master students, and 100 engineering master students. More than 600 are enrolled in three undergraduate majors of Applied Chemistry, Material Chemistry and Fine Chemicals.
Since 1952 when the first chemistry specialty was founded, the school has produced thousands of outstanding graduates for the nation and enjoys high reputation in China and many parts of the world |
