 to School of Business


East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), located in the cultural and historic metropolitan city of Shanghai, is a key university directly led by State Education Ministry. ECUST offers a diverse selection of potential areas of study, providing its students with the opportunity to learn and adapt at a top-ranked university.

School of Business was formally established in 1990. It grew out of the Department of Management Science and Engineering (founded in 1983) and the Institute of Economic Development (founded in 1987) during the period in which the University was transformed from a college featuring chemical engineering to a comprehensive university.

In the early 1980s, the School's focus was on cultivating undergraduates majoring in Engineering Management, and the teachers’ research was mainly on management in the manufacturing industry, especially the chemical industry. Later, with the increasing demand on talents in business administration and economics, ECUST decided to expand the scale of education in economics and management and increase the number of education programs and hence programs for undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD candidates started successively, including economics, management science and engineering, business administration.

School of Business seeks to combine and develop the disciplines of economics and management together. Currently, there are:

With the expansion of education scale and faculty, the School's social influence has been growing. Therefore, the School set up the Professional Master's Programs Center in order to provide management education programs for on-the-job people. Currently, the School is running a variety of education programs, including MBA (Master of Business Administration), EMBA (Executive Master of Business Administration), MPAcc (Master of Professional Accounting), MF (Master of Finance), MEM (Mater of Engineering Management), ME (Master of Engineering, in the fields of Project Management and Logistics Engineering), and EDP (Executive Development Program).

The School always takes it as its aim to nurture personnel needed in society, and the staff members take pride in having upbeat and energetic students on campus and in the alumni who are providing their services in various trades and making their contribution to the country. By September 2015, the School has 1,970 undergraduates, 419 academic postgraduates and PhD candidates, 240 EMBA students, 1,116 MBA students, 516 ME students, 33 MEM students, 140 MBA students on joint MBA programs, 120 MPAcc students and 16 MF students in total. By September 2015, the School's alumni has numbered 15,998.

School of Business boasts a teaching force with profound academic attainments and rich teaching experience, with which it has been able to run high-quality education programs and for which it has been highly valued by the society. Currently, the School has 154 full-time lecturers, among whom 34 are professors, 72 associate professors, 48 lecturers and 23 doctoral supervisors. The School has also invited dozens of renowned professors and experts from both at home and abroad as honorary professors, visiting professors or adjunct professors.

The School attaches importance to both academic research and teaching and every year it undertakes over 50 research projects, including international cooperative projects, business consulting projects and research projects at national, provincial and municipal levels. Some of the research results have been awarded national or provincial prizes and 7 teachers have successively won China’s top prize for economics – the Sun Yefang Prize.

The School makes it a long-term goal to be internationally-oriented in education. Our strategy for internationalization in education focuses on academic exchanges and students exchanges with universities in Europe and the United States and developing countries as well. At the same time, we try to provide the teachers with more opportunities for international academic exchanges and an international exchange platform for the students to learn in diversified cultures. The overseas undergraduates are from Southeast Asian and African countries; the overseas postgraduates are mainly from the developing countries, but the number of postgraduates from Europe is on the rise, who choose ECUST School of Business and take our IMBA Program as well as the academic postgraduate program. We have now a diversified student source, with the overseas students coming from over 20 countries.

Currently, the School has established educational exchanges and cooperation with over 20 renowned colleges and universities in Europe, America, Oceania and Asia as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and has running the Sino-Australian Joint MBA Program on a long-term basis; it has built educational alliance with the University of Bologna (Italy), ICN Business School (France), University of Uppsala (Sweden), MGIMO University (Russia), and University of La Salle (Mexico) to collaborate for MIEX Master in International Management program which has received high praises upon participation in 2010 EQUIS International Certification assessment in ICN Business School (France). The ECUST-ESCEM IMBA Double Degree Program has passed the AACSB and EQUIZ accreditation at ESCEM side. The School is to launch a Double Degree EMBA Program in cooperation with Plymouth University (UK), and has been running undergraduate, graduate and MBA exchange programs on a long term basis with University of Hamburg (Germany), ICN Business School (France), ESCEM (France), ESDES (France), Linnaeus University (Sweden), Halmstad University (Sweden), University of Fribourg International Institute of Management in Technology (Switzerland), University of Michigan-Flint (USA), Missouri State University (USA), Rollins College (USA).

Over the last decade, the School has successively organized international academic exchange programs with a number of well-known universities and institutions around the world, mainly including: Kobe University (Japan), Sapporo University (Japan), International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria), Stanford University (USA), University of Michigan (USA), University of Chicago (USA), New York University (USA), Columbia University (USA), University of California (UCLA)(USA), Napier University (UK), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), University of Fribourg (Switzerland), HTW Chur University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland), University of Uppsala (Sweden), University of Hamburg (Germany), University of Liege (Belgium), ICN Business School (France), ESCEM School of Business and Management (France) (It will change its name to French Business School (FBS) in Jan. 2013), National Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan), Tunghai University (Taiwan)and University of Hong Kong (Hongkong).

Holding onto the concept of “knowledge acquisition through research into the nature of the world”, the School has been advocating to the students the spirit of exploration for knowledge and encouraging them to do so. In this respect, the School has established close links with many multinational and national companies for production and research, providing consultancy and solutions for government agencies and other organizations, and in return, it gets a lot of supports for the School's development.

Apart from advocating social responsibility, academic freedom and research innovation, the School dedicates itself to promoting economic development and social progress in China. The School not only pays attention to nurturing personnel with various skills and capability needed in society, but also tries in every way it can to provide help for students' career development.
